For Issue 11 of Montez Press's The Interjection Calendar, artist and guest editor Racheal Crowther and JOUISSANCE founder Cherry Cheng collaborated on a new scent, released in the form of a limited-edition scented bookmark.

In response to the issue, focused entirely on scent, Cheng worked through each artist and writer’s contribution, translating key notes into fleeting olfactory impressions.

The resulting scent is a mix of especially artificial and urban scents such as wet asphalt and the green tangs of thrown-away bouquets. Individual raw materials such as Isocyclocitral and cis-Jasmone, typically used to construct other naturalistic accords, are used here in isolation and devoid of context. The ultra-modern sci-fi note of Clonal (Dodecane Nitrile) is juxtaposed against the mineral, old-stone church impression of Fumencens. The scent, in Cheng's own words, is "a kind of olfactory babel - where chaos and cacophony are held together without fully resolving".

The scented bookmark is created through micro-encapsulation, a technique that prints scent directly onto paper, which remains dormant until activated and lasts much longer than sprayed perfume. Release the scent by rubbing between your fingers.
