As told to Jouissance

A Literate Passion

Continuing JOUISSANCE’s new series, where writers, creatives and muses in our circle unveil their curated personal library – an idea inspired by our forever literary muse Anaïs Nin’s letters and the secret confessions she exchanged with fellow writer and lover Henry Miller.

We begin by checking in with collaborators from our ongoing erotic short story series, The Collector. This week, Susannah Davies-Crook, author of Les Mains Négatives talks us through her treasured summer reads, dream sun-kissed spots and most evocative scent. Just in time for your holidays, whether home or away…

Your five ultimate summer reads?

Delta of Venus by Anaïs Nin. A great book to read in public if you can get hold of one of the sexier vintage editions. Instant green flag if someone chats you up because they’ve read it.

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk. She’s an absolute genius. I read this whilst doing the Camino trail [in Spain] so it holds a special place in my heart as it fully added to my already overloaded backpack. But I annotated it so brought it the whole way regardless…also, there’s an excellent video of Pedro Pascal reading it on a beach, so it doesn’t get better than that really.

The Island of Doctor Moreau by H. G. Wells. I’m writing my first fiction novel that borrows from this and I reread it a lot.

The Magus by John Fowles. One of my all-time favourite books and I’m writing an adaptation of it at the moment.

Your Silence Will Not Protect You by Audre Lorde. Because I constantly need reminding and she is a flare in the darkness as a guide for how to write and how to live.

Susanna Davies-Crook's perfect summer reading spot

The perfect summer reading spot?

I love reading in European squares like Biarritz in France, San Sebastián in Spain or Lecce in Italy. Or in-bed, post-swim, with snacks and a spritz, going from day to night lost in a book is pretty much my ideal surroundings.

Your favourite JOUISSANCE scent?

I actually love them all for different times! I have LA BAGUE D’O because it’s kind of deep and sexy, but I love EN PLEIN AIR for summer.

Jouissance Diary

"It was while writing a Diary that I discovered how to capture living moments," Anaïs Nin wrote. "In the Diary I only wrote of what interested me genuinely, what I felt most strongly at the moment, and I found this fervour, this enthusiasm produced a vividness which often withered in the formal work. Improvisation, free association, obedience to mood, impulse, brought forth countless images, portraits, descriptions, impressionistic sketches, symphonic experiments, from which I could dip at any time for material."

In tribute to Anaïs Nin, one of our foremost inspirations for Jouissance, our DIARY captures our most treasured moments, our obsessions and preoccupations, our research and the lessons we learn, and the work of our cherished friends and collaborators.

Les Mains Négatives

This body, these arms, hard neck and sweaty upper lip. The gentle scent of body wafted over the other larger men between them.
